Why Regular Soap Isn't Enough for Grapplers (And What to Use Instead)

Walk into any pharmacy and you'll find shelves of body wash. Most of them will do the job for a standard day — washing off sweat, surface dirt, general odour. But if your training involves grappling with other people on shared mats for an hour or more, "standard" isn't the right benchmark.
Here's why regular soap falls short after grappling training, and what you should actually be looking for.
What Happens to Your Skin During a Grappling Session
Before getting into product specifics, it's worth understanding what you're dealing with after a hard roll.
During intense training, your body temperature rises and you sweat heavily. Sweat temporarily raises your skin's surface pH — healthy skin sits between 4.5 and 5.5 (mildly acidic), but the accumulation of sweat pushes it upward. A higher pH creates a more hospitable environment for bacterial and fungal growth.
At the same time, mat training creates abrasions. These small breaks in the skin — from friction against the mat, collar grips, and positional pressure — create entry points that a healthy, intact skin barrier would normally block. Combine compromised skin with a bacterially rich shared surface and you have the basic equation for infection risk.
Why Regular Soap Isn't Enough
Standard soap is designed to remove visible dirt and surface-level bacteria through a mechanical washing action. It's effective for everyday hygiene. But "effective for everyday hygiene" and "effective for post-grappling decontamination" are different things.
Regular soaps:
— Don't have residual antimicrobial action after rinsing
— Are often high-pH (alkaline), which can further disrupt the skin's acid mantle
— Don't address the full range of pathogens you're exposed to on a mat (fungal, bacterial)
— Can strip the skin barrier with frequent use, making you more susceptible to infection — not less
For grapplers showering daily (or twice daily during hard training blocks), this matters. You're not cleaning your skin once a week. You're hitting it every session.
What to Look for in a Grappling Body Wash
When evaluating a body wash for post-training use, these are the ingredients and properties that matter:
Silver Ion (Ag⁺) Technology: Silver ions are clinically recognised for their broad-spectrum antimicrobial action. They disrupt bacterial cell membranes and interfere with microbial replication. Skin Barrier Compatibility: Look for a formulation that cleans without stripping. A body wash that aggressively removes bacteria is counterproductive if it also destroys the lipid layer that forms your skin's natural defence. You want clean and protected, not just clean.
